summer of 1990, i joined the Royal Crusaders Movement (RCM) — the oldest choral group in St. Paul of the Cross Parish. i was a member for about 10 years, and during that time i experienced singing during Holy Week. since there were 8 choirs in the parish, the choirs were assigned a mass — Maundy Thursday’s Washing of the Feet or Good Friday’s Veneration of the Cross.
this year, Eve Awakened was invited to sing with SJ Tañong Choir (SJTC) for the Holy Week masses. our commitment started a week before Palm Sunday when we attended their 6pm mass and practiced with them after. they provided us the necessary sheet music and also asked us to record the necessary voicing to aid us in studying the songs. practices were stressful in a way because there was a lot of pressure to learn a lot of songs in a very small amount of time. but they were mostly fulfilling and fun because we learned not just new songs but how to improve our singing technique.
anyway, the last week was very busy for SJTC. Palm Sunday 7am mass, Tuesday 8pm practice, Maundy Thursday 5pm mass, Good Friday Seven Last Words at 12nn and Veneration of the Cross mass at 3pm, Black Saturday’s Easter Vigil 8pm mass and Easter Sunday’s 5am mass. it was my very first time to attend and witness an Easter Vigil mass. there were a lot of Psalms and the rites were like Easter’s already. very cool!
the few days that i served with SJTC was a very rewarding experience. i hope that it would be the same next year. =)
HAPPY EASTER MONDAY! =)
